Adjectives and adverbs are parts of speech and are used to provide additional information about other words. Adjectives and adverbs are also known as content words because they provide important information in sentences. Sometimes students are not sure when to use an adverb or an adjective. This short guide provides an overview and rules for using both adjectives and adverbs. Adjectives Adjectives modify nouns and can be used a few different ways in a sentence. In their simplest form, they are placed directly before a noun: Tom is an  excellent  singer.I bought a  comfortable  chair.Shes thinking about buying a  new  house. Adjectives are also used in simple sentences with the verb to be. In this case, the adjective describes the subject of the sentence: Jack is happy.Peter was very tired.Maryll be excited when you tell her. Adjectives are used with sense verbs or verbs of  appearance (feel, taste, smell, sound, appear and seem) to modify the noun which comes before the verb: The fish tasted awful.Did you see Peter? He seemed very upset.Im afraid the meat smelled rotten. Adverbs Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or  other adverbs. They are easily recognized because they end in ly. They are often used at the end of a sentence to modify the verb: Jack drove carelessly.Tom played the match effortlessly.Jason complained about his classes constantly. Adverbs are used to modify adjectives: They seemed extremely satisfied.She paid increasingly high prices. Adverbs are also used to modify other adverbs: The people in the line moved incredibly quickly.She wrote the report unusually neatly. Confusing Adjectives and Adverbs As you may have noticed, adverbs often end in ly. In fact, you can often change an adjective into an adverb by simply adding ly. (For example: slow/slowly, careful/carefully, patient/patiently.) However, there are a number of adjectives that also end in ly, which can be confusing. For example: It was a chilly afternoon in the country.Alice has curly red hair.There are many friendly people in Portland.What a lovely surprise to see you again! Adjectives and Adverbs With the Same Form There are a number of adjectives and adverbs that have the same form, which can confuse non-native English speakers. The two most common are hard  and fast.  Other words that can function as both adverbs and adjectives include easy, fair, and just.   Adjective:  She had a hard time at school.Adverb:  She works very hard at her job.Adjective:  He said it was an easy test.  Adverb:  Please take it easy and relax.  Adjective:  He is a just man.Adverb:  I just missed the bus.

According to Storm Jameson, â€Å"Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed.† Jameson suggests that happiness is not just having fun, but it is to be present in the moment and to make connections with others. Happiness is rarely found in the novel Fahrenheit 451, because this joyless society defines â€Å"fun† as driving with the need for speed and with an intention of killing small animals and people or the deadening white noise of endless television viewing. The novel Fahrenheit 451 conveys this very idea as the protagonist Guy Montag and others in his society are unable to achieve full happiness. Author Ray Bradbury suggests the truth of Jameson’s statement primarily through†¦show more content†¦Clarisse says, â€Å"I tell them that sometimes I just sit and think†(21). Finally, Montag is made aware of this simplicity. When he is trying to find happiness himself, he remembers that Clarisse finds contenment through siting, observing and thinking. Bradbury supports Jameson’s quote of happiness by showing how Mildred is suicidal and has no connection with people and her only connection is with her â€Å"Family† in the walls on Television. Montag begins to find himself and starts to realize that he really doesn’t care about Mildred, that she is an empty vessel. Later in the book Montage feels a stronger connection to a girl that he has only spoken to a handful of times versus his own wife whom he is suppose to have a strong connection. When Montage almost died by getting run over he says, â€Å"I wonder if they were the ones who killed Clarisse! He wanted to run after them yelling. His eyes watered.† (114). Montag knew Mildred for years yet he realizes that when she leaves him she will never miss him or mourn him; Montag feels clo ser with Clarisse as marvels at her idea of happiness. Montag starts to develop deeper feelings about thoughtful people like Clarisse. He would cry for this girl he barely knew more than he would for his own wife whom he felt no connection to. Pride And Prejudice By Jane Austen Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is the story of an English family in the early 1800's. The central theme in the story is the necessity of making a good marriage for each of the five daughters in the Bennet family. Elizabeth Bennet is the central character in the novel and the second oldest daughter. The role of her sisters' characters influence Elizabeth's thoughts about her own romantic interest, Fitzwilliam Darcy, throughout the novel. Lydia Bennet, Elizabeth's youngest sister plays an important role in Elizabeth's feelings for Darcy. Ultimately, Lydia's improper behavior brings Elizabeth and Darcy together, justifying Austen's portrayal of Lydia as an uncivilized, idle, and irrational young woman. Lydia Bennet's role in Pride and Prejudice is twofold. She is the first of five daughters to be married which supports the novel's main theme of the necessity of making a good marriage. Her elopement with Wickham brings disgrace to the family, nevertheless, she does marry which satisfies her mother's wish to see all of her daughters marry well. "The business of her life was to get her daughters married." (Vol. I, Chapter 1). Lydia's role is also that of her mother's favorite daughter. When Lydia elopes with Wickham, Elizabeth is mortified but realizes that Darcy's previous accusations against Wickham and her family were justified. "Oh! how heartily did she grieve over every ungracious sensation she had ever encouraged, every saucy speech she had ever directed towards him." (Vol. III, Chapter 10) Darcy arranges the proper marriage of Lydia and Wickham, saving the entire Bennet family from disrespect and embarrassment. When Elizabeth attempts to thank Darcy he admits "that the wish of giving happiness to you...led me on, I thought only of you." (Vol. III, Chapter 16) Lydia's reckless, improper behavior provides the catalyst for the engagement of Elizabeth and Darcy. Throughout the novel, Lydia is portrayed as an uncivilized, idle, irrational 16 year old girl. She is lacking in common sense and good judgment, disregarding the consequences of her actions. "Look here, I have bought this bonnet. I do not think it is very pretty; but I thought I might as well buy it as not." (Vol. II, Chapter 16). When Lydia returns to her family after eloping with Wickham she shows no remorse for the disgrace she brought to the family. "She turned from sister to sister, demanding their congratulations...she went after dinner to show her ring and boast of being married." (Vol. III, Chapter 9). After the marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy, Lydia continued her disregard for common decency as shown in a letter to her sister; "Wickham would like a place at court very much, and I do not think we shall have quite money enough to live upon without some help." (Vol. III, Chapter 19). Throughout Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Lydia Bennet is portrayed as an uncivilized and irrational young woman; the youngest of five sisters who is the first to marry. Lydia is a minor character in the story in comparison to her older sister, Elizabeth, but she plays a major role in the marriage of her sister and Darcy. It is Lydia's improper behavior (elopement) that opens Elizabeth's eyes to Darcy's true goodness and affection, allowing her to admit her love for him.
